Sims Leads CSU with Season-High 26 Points at Marquette

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) scored a season-high 26 points to earn game high scoring honors,  but visiting Chicago State dropped a 91-74 decision to Marquette Monday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center to open a three-game road swing to close out the year 2015.
 
Sims shot 10-of-16 from the field and went 6-of-9 from three-point range in just 24 minutes of play and scored 21 of his points after halftime.
 
The Green and White opened the game with an 8-3 advantage after Sims connected on a three-pointer at the 17:40 mark and later took an 11-4 lead a minute later on a conventional three-point play from junior Quron Davis (Chicago, Ill./Simeon). MU would go then on a 24-5 scoring run over eight minutes to capture a 28-16 lead with 8:47 left in the stanza. The home team finished off the half with a 28-17 run in the final seven minute to head into intermission with a 56-33 advantage.
 
CSU (4-10) began the second half by tallying 22 of the first 35 points scored in the opening six minutes with Sims scoring 10 points to pull within 68-55 with 13:34 left in the game, but a quick 16-7 scoring run helped the Golden Eagles record their biggest lead of the contest at 84-62 at the 7:31 mark. The Cougars would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
 
Owens finished with 14 points, a season-high tying five assists and two steals for Chicago State, while senior Kieran Woods (Chicago, Ill./Crane) contributed 10 points and dished out a season-best six assists.
 
Henry Ellison recorded a double-double of 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to lead Marquette (9-2).
 
The Cougars continue their road swing on Dec. 28 when they head to Rochester, Mich. to take on Oakland with a start time of 7 p.m., Eastern Time.
