Cougars Lose at Home to Valparaiso, 71-53

CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's basketball team made its return to the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center Friday night against Valparaiso, but the visiting Crusaders managed to capture a 71-53 victory.
 
The visitors opened the game with a 12-7 lead in the game's opening minutes before CSU scored seven of the next 10 points in six-minute stretch to slice its deficit to 15-14 that ended with senior Jawad Adekoya (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) hit a pair of free throws with 8:38 remaining in the stanza. VU then went on a 24-9 scoring run for the remainder of the half to take a 39-23 lead at intermission.
 
Chicago State (3-7) started the second half by scoring 13 of the first 22 points in six-plus minutes to pull within 12 points at 48-36 with 13:50 left in the game after senior Kieran Woods (Chicago, Ill./Crane) drained a three-pointer. A 20-7 scoring drive by VU over a seven-minute span helped hike its lead to 68-43 at the 5:47 mark and the Cougars never pulled within 14 points the rest of the way.
 
Woods recorded 14 points and five assists to lead the Green and White, while freshman Anthony Eaves (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) contributed nine points. Junior Trayvon Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Brown Deer) nearly tallied a double-double as he grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and added eight points.
 
Alec Peters tallied a game-high 26 points and connected on all six of his three-point attempts to lead the Crusaders (9-2).
 
CSU opens a short two-game road swing on Sunday evening at Northwestern in a live Big Ten Network broadcast with a start time of 6 p.m.
