Zmiric's Double-Double Leads CSU at Home against Valpariso

Milica Zmiric led Chicago State with a double-double of 13 digs and 11 kills tonight against Valparaiso

CHICAGO - Junior Milicia Zmiric recorded a double-double of 13 digs and 11 kills in leading host Chicago State volleyball during a non-conference match tonight against Valparaiso at the Jacoby Dickens Center. The visiting Crusaders won the match in three sets by scores of 25-18, 29-27 and 25-17.

"I thought we executed the gameplan like I wanted them to in terms of coming out of the gates ready to play. We outblocked them (12-5), we served aggresively and got a lot of production out of Milica (Zmiric), who has stepped into a new role as a setter. I was happy with the way the team adjusted to this lineup change tonight," CSU head coach Dawn Barnes stated after the match.

In addition to her double-double, Zmiric also finished with five block assists and dished out four assists. Freshman Sarah Metcalfe (Huntington Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) recorded 24 assists, while junior Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule) and sophomore Chinwendu Ngwadom (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) produced eight and seven kills, respectively. Junior Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon) posted a match-high six blocks (one solo, five assisted) and senior Julia Menhart (Augsburg, Germany/FOS Friedberg) tallied a match-leading 16 digs to pace the Cougar defense.

Rachel Bruinsma led Valparaiso with a match-best 12 kills, while Kelsey Berrington posted a double-double of a match-high 35 assists and 10 digs.

"They (CSU) played with a lot of heart, a lot of passion and a lot of desire (on the floor tonight). It was good that we had a great home crowd and it's always fun to play at home," Coach Barnes added.

The Cougars return to Western Athletic Conference play this Friday night as they host Kansas City at the Dickens Center with a start time of 7 p.m.
