Women’s Soccer Falls to Grand Canyon in Double Overtime Battle, 3-2

CHICAGO – The Chicago State University women's soccer team found itself in another hard fought Western Athletic Conference battle here this afternoon at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Stadium as visiting Grand Canyon captured a 3-2 double-overtime win.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 28th minute when freshman Lexi Montgomery (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) scored her first collegiate goal after receiving a pass from fellow classmate Hannah Etcitty (Gallup, N.M./Middle College) for a 1-0 lead that held up going into halftime.

GCU evened the score at 1-1 in the 63rd minute thanks to a goal from junior Cassie Beckwith off an assist from freshman Ashly Hilfer. The Green and White regained the lead at 2-1 just a minute later when freshman Sara Marcotte (Republic, Mo./Republic) hit the back of the net for her second goal of the season thanks to a pass from freshman Jyllian Coggins (Birch Run, Mich./Birch Run). The Antelopes struck again in the 65th minute when freshman Milla Benedetti scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at 2-2 and the score remained the same at the end of regulation.

After 15 minutes of extra play, Benedetti scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute on a penalty kick for the final score.

The Cougars travel West for a pair of WAC games next week beginning Friday (Oct. 24) at Utah Valley with a start time of 8 p.m., central time.
