Woinowsky’s Double-Double Paces CSU against Utah Valley

Junior Elli Woinowsky (4) recorded a double-double of 18 kills and 11 digs in Saturday's WAC home match against Utah Valley
CHICAGO – Junior Elli Woinowsky (Berlin, Germany/Merian Oberschule) recorded a double-double with a match-best 18 kills and 11 digs to lead Chicago State volleyball in a 3-0 defeat to visiting Utah Valley in a Western Athletic Conference contest this afternoon at the Jacoby Dickens Center.

"There was a lot of moments where we played some excellent volleyball, but were still hampered with some injuries and only had two blocks today with Essence Jackson-Jones (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon) still out. We struggled today not having her as a part of our blocking," CSU head coach Dawn Barnes stated. "We're getting better and better with each match and until we get healthy, we just have to continue grinding it out (on the floor)."

Both teams began the match with a seesaw-type battle that saw 12 ties and two lead changes until CSU scored three consecutive points to gain an 18-15 lead thanks to back-to-back service aces from freshman Sarah Metcalfe (Huntington Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos). The Cougars later took a 23-21 lead on a UVU hitting error before the visitors scored six of the next nine points to take a slim 27-26 advantage following a Kalani Morris kill. After CSU evened the score at 27-27 thanks to a kill from sophomore Chinwendu Ngwadom (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons), the Wolverines captured the set when Lauren Bakker recorded kills on back-to-back plays.

In the second set, Utah Valley (8-11, 3-2 WAC) broke a 13-13 tie by scoring nine of the next 15 points played to claim a 22-19 lead after a Morris kill and later took a 24-21 lead on a kill from Bakker. The Green and White later scored two unanswered points to pull within 24-23 following a kill from junior Chelsea Sheldon-Medina (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North), but an attack error game the visitors a 2-0 advantage going into intermission.

CSU (6-13, 0-5 WAC) started the third set with a 3-1 lead on a Woinowsky kill, but Utah Valley on a 12-3 run to capture a 13-6 lead that ended with a CSU hitting error. The Wolverines took their largest lead of the stanza at 22-16 following a block from Kiahna Steiner and Madison Wolford and the Cougars could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Metcalfe finished the match with match highs of 36 assists and three service aces for the Green and White. Sheldon-Medina added seven kills and fellow junior Selena Newell (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) contributed five kills on the day.

Bakkar and Macky Treanor each recorded 10 kills to lead Utah Valley.

The Cougars head to the Southwest next weekend for a pair of WAC matches beginning on Thursday, Oct. 16 at Texas-Pan American with a 7 p.m., start time.
