EDINBURG, Texas – Despite 21 kills and 10 digs from senior Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo), Chicago State volleyball dropped a Western Athletic Conference match at UTPA 3-1 (25-14, 26-24, 23-25, 25-22) on Thursday (Nov. 7) evening.

Following an opening set loss, the Cougars turned it around in the second. Trailing 20-14, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run to knot up the score. Sioto had a pair of kills in the run. The Cougars were the first to earn set point following a kill by senior Madeleine Radtke (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) to make the score 24-23. Facing a set point, UTPA asked for a timeout. The break worked. The Broncs stormed out of the timeout with three straight points to take the frame.

In the third set Chicago State used four straight points to tie the score at 18. Junior Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) recorded an ace following a UTPA timeout for the 18th point. Sioto had the kill for point 25.

The fourth set saw seven ties and four lead changes. The final lead change came thanks to a 6-1 UTPA run. The stretch put the Broncs up 19-16 and erased a two-point 15-13 deficit.

Desiderio and junior Julia Menhart (Augsburg, Germany/FOS Friedberg) each finished with double-digit digs. Menhart recorded 17 while Desiderio added 10 digs and an ace.

Maria Kleifoth led the Broncs with 15 kills.

UTPA improves to 13-17 (2-11 WAC). The Cougars fall to 2-26 (0-13 WAC). Chicago State plays their final road WAC match of the season on Saturday when the Cougars play at New Mexico State in a 7 p.m. PT first serve.
