CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball saw their 2013 season come to an end on Saturday (Nov. 16) evening following a 3-1 (25-13, 27-25, 22-25, 25-17) loss to Seattle U at the Jacoby Dickens Center.

It was senior night for the Cougars. Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo), Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas), Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom), Madeleine Radtke (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) and Rachel Levitt (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) were honored in a pre-match ceremony.

Chicago State trailed the second set by as many as eight points before rallying back. The big run came with the score 20-15. Chicago State scored four straight to advance within a point. A block by Sioto and freshman Chinwendu Ngwadom (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) came for point 18. Desiderio provided a kill for point 19 after a Seattle U timeout. Seattle U earned set point at 24-22 but the Cougars denied both of them. The Redhawks asked for a timeout, and after the break committed an attack error to give Chicago State their own set point at 25-24. However three straight Seattle points ended the Cougars' hopes in the frame.

The success the Cougars found in the second continued to the third. Chicago State never trailed in the third set. They led 15-11 before Seattle knotted the score at 18. Not going down without a fight, the Cougars rattled off the next six points. Desiderio had a pair of kills in the stretch that not even a Seattle timeout could halt.

Seattle closed the match with a victory in the fourth set. It was just a 14-13 Seattle lead after kills by Radtke and Desiderio. However the Redhawks scored four of the next five points to take over.

The Cougars were led offensively by Desiderio's 15 kills. Sioto added 14 kills. Each had seven digs. Junior Julia Menhart (Augsburg, Germany/FOS Friedberg) finished with 22 digs.

Seattle finishes the 2013 regular season 12-19 (9-7 WAC). The Cougars finish 2013 with a record of 2-29 (0-16 WAC). The 20 sets the Cougars won in 2013 are the most for a single season by a Chicago State team since 2007.
