PHOENIX – Chicago State volleyball was upended by Grand Canyon 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21) on Thursday (Oct. 31) evening in a Western Athletic Conference match at GCU Arena. It was the Cougars' first ever visit to Grand Canyon.
The Cougars out-hit the 'Lopes .205 to .128 in the opening frame but couldn't come up with the opening set victory. A five-point run by the Cougars put Chicago State up 14-13. GCU responded with an 8-1 run to put the frame out of reach. In the second set, back-to-back kills by junior
Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) made the score 7-6 before three consecutive GCU points gave the 'Lopes some breathing room. A 7-0 run for GCU in the third set guided the 'Lopes to a sweep.
Hayleigh Friemoth had a match-high 16 kills while adding 11 digs.
Senior
Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) earned 12 kills for the Cougars. Three Cougars finished with double-digit digs. Junior
Julia Menhart (Augsburg, Germany/FOS Friedberg) notched a career-high 22 digs. Desiderio totaled 14 digs. Senior
Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) finished with 12 digs. Senior
Madeleine Radtke (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) recorded a season-high three aces.
Chicago State falls to 2-23 (0-10 WAC). The 'Lopes improve to 9-14 (3-7 WAC). Chicago State returns to WAC play on Saturday (Nov. 2) against Bakersfield. The home match will start at 1 p.m.
