SEATTLE – Chicago State volleyball fell 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 26-24) at Seattle U on Thursday (Oct. 17) in a Western Athletic Conference match. The Cougars were within a point of forcing a fifth set but saw the Redhawks score the final four points of the fourth set to clinch the match.

The Redhawks led 18-15 in the opening frame before the Cougars rallied back. A solo block for point 16 and a block assist by freshman Chinwendu Ngwadom (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) on the next point put the Cougars within one at 18-17. Junior Valeria Desidero tied the score at 18 with a kill. The Cougars kept pushing and when junior Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) provided an ace the Cougars found themselves up 21-19. Senior Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) had kills for points 24 and 25 to clinch the opening set victory. Chicago State recorded six blocks in the first set alone.

While Seattle U controlled sets two and three, the fourth was a back-and-forth affair. Chicago State struggled out of the gates, falling behind 10-6. Back came the Cougars, taking a 14-13 lead on a Sioto kill. Chicago State built a lead as large as five at 19-14 before the Redhawks returned the favor and mounted their own rally. It was a one-point Chicago State lead when senior Madeleine Radtke (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) delivered a kill to give the Cougars set point at 24-22. It would be Chicago State's final point. Seattle U denied a pair of Chicago State set points and then won the match with kills by Kerry Lane and Iris Ivanis for points 25 and 26.

Sioto recorded a match-high 17 kills and two aces. Freshman Mackenzie Lotter (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) added 40 assists. Junior Julia Menhart (Augsburg, Germany/FOS Friedberg) finished with 15 digs, her career-high for a four set match.

Seattle U improves to 9-14 (6-2 WAC). The Cougars fall to 2-19 (0-7 WAC). Chicago State continues WAC play on Saturday (Oct. 19) with a trip to Idaho. First serve is set for 7 p.m. PT.
