OXFORD, Ohio – Chicago State volleyball dropped matches to Miami (Ohio) and Indiana State by identical 3-0 scores on Saturday (Sept. 8) at the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Invitational. The Cougars lost to Miami 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 and Indiana State 25-16, 25-17, 25-18.

Miami (Ohio) recap
The Redhawks scored the first four points of the second set before the Cougars pushed back and took a 10-9 advantage. The Cougars tied it at 18 thanks to two kills by sophomore Kimberly Lindner (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) (Antigo, Wis./Antigo/Colby CC) and one by Mya Williams (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike/Delaware State). It would be the last time the set would be tied though, as the Redhawks finished the frame on a 7-0 run.

Lindner led Chicago State with seven kills.

Indiana State recap
Much like against the Redhawks, the Cougars were done in by late runs against the Sycamores. In the second set, the Sycamores finished the frame on a 7-1 run after Chicago State made it a two-point game at 18-16 on an ace by junior Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas). In the third it was an 18-17 score before Indiana State finished the frame on an identical 7-1 push.

Lindner led Chicago State with a career-best eight kills. She was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.

The Cougars were without kills leader and senior captain Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC) for both matches.

“Sydney hurt her ankle against Temple yesterday so we didn't have her today,” Chicago State head coach Bob Eskew said. “We played tough today, but no excuses. We need to get to a place where we can win shorthanded.”

Chicago State falls to 2-10.

The Cougars travel to Western Illinois on Tuesday.
