CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball lost to USC Upstate (25-14, 25-15, 25-18) and DePaul (25-10, 25-22, 25-14) at Gentile Arena during the Rambler Challenge hosted by Loyola on Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon.

The Cougars couldn't slowdown the Spartans offense in the first set as USC Upstate hit .424 with17 kills.
USC Upstate started quick once again in the second, taking a 20-8 advantage. Back came the Cougars though to make it a 22-14 score and force the Spartans to take both of their timeouts. It wouldn't be enough, as USC Upstate took the frame 25-15.
The third set was the tightest, featuring five ties and three lead changes. A block by sophomore seter
Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and senior
Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC) knotted the set at 15. It was 18-17 in favor of the Spartans, when a 5-1 USC Upstate run put the game away.
Van Munster, in her first match back following an ankle injury, recorded six kills. The Townsell sisters, Mia and Mysta, each recorded 12 digs. Freshman
Alyssa Podwell (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) added seven kills, four block assists and an ace.
USC Upstate improves to 4-6 with the win.
DePaul recap
The Cougars and Blue Demons played a second set which featured 10 ties and six lead changes. The Cougars recorded three blocks and four aces in the second set alone. Junior
Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo/Martin Methodist College) had three consecutive aces in a 7-0 Cougars run early in the set. DePaul led 22-21, before finishing the frame on a 3-1 run to win the game. Chicago State had some bad luck late in the set when Brewer was forced to leave the floor for several points after suffering a cut on her forehead.
The Blue Demons put the Cougars away in the third, out-hitting Chicago State .467 to .088 in the set.
Sophomore
Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) led the Cougars with eight kills while adding six digs.
Junior
Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) had 15 digs as she played the libero spot for the Cougars.
Podwell was named to the all-tournament team.
"Alyssa, for a freshman, is extremely savy on the court," head coach Bob Eskew said. "She's going to be a real asset to the program."
DePaul moves to 5-6 with the win. Chicago State is now 2-14. The Cougars travel to Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday (Sept. 18) for a non-conference contest at Horizon League foe Wright State.
