CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball dropped a Great West Conference contest to Texas-Pan American on Thursday (Nov. 8) evening 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-21) at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
Chicago State jumped on the Broncs early, by winning the first set 25-21. Sophomore
Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) notched six kills in the first set alone. The Cougars kept it rolling in the second, scoring the first seven points of the frame. The first point came on another Desiderio kill. UTPA rallied though, eventually tying it at 15. A kill by Senior Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC) and a Broncs attack error gave the Cougars set point at 24-23. A service error, a ball handling error and then a Broncs kill put the set in the column of UTPA.
The Broncs won the third set to go up 2-1. Chicago State seemed to halt the Broncs' offense in the fourth set by jumping out to a 10-7 advantage. But then a 3-0, 4-0 and another 3-0 run saw the Broncs take an 18-12 advantage. Chicago State pushed back, eventually making it a 21-19 game thanks to three straight kills by Van Munster. Down the stretch, however, the Broncs were able to get the key points to put the match away.
Desiderio finished with 18 kills, one short of her career mark. She also added eight digs. Van Munster and freshman
Alyssa Podwell (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) each added 11 kills.
Sophomore setter
Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) missed the contest due to an injury. Typically the Cougars run a 6-2 offense with Brewer and junior
Paula Sioto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo) (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Educacional Raphael Di Santo/ Martin Methodist College) both setting. Sioto put up 46 assists and helped the Cougars out-kill the Broncs 51-49 on the night, but Brewer's injury forced the Cougars to run a 5-1 for the match, something they normally don't do.
“We really missed
Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) tonight,” head coach Bob Eskew said.
The win improves UTPA to 10-17 (3-4 GWC). The Cougars fall to 2-28 (0-7 GWC). Chicago State returns to the court for the regular season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Utah Valley. It will be Senior Day for the Cougars. Van Munster and
Madeleine Radtke (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore/Prairie State College) will be honored before the match.
