OREM, Utah – Freshman Alyssa Podwell (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glenn, Ill./Providence Catholic) recorded her second consecutive double-digit kill contest on Friday (Oct 19) evening in Chicago State volleyball's 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) setback at Great West Conference foe Utah Valley.

The Wolverines, the preseason pick to win the GWC, built a 14-7 advantage in the first set. The Cougars clawed their way back to knot it up at 17 on a kill by senior Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland/Grand Rapids CC). Sophomore Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike)'s (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) kill made it 18-17. The two teams went back with neither team leading by more than a point until a Utah Valley kill for point 24 and a block for point 25 gave the set to the Wolverines at 25-23.

The second set turned on an early 7-0 Utah Valley run which gave the Wolverines a 10-3 advantage.

Utah Valley led for the majority of the third set before the Cougars made a late run to make it interesting. Facing match-point at 24-19 the Cougars came up with three straight points to force a Utah Valley timeout. The break worked as a kill by the Wolverines' Kaysie Taylor ended the match.

Chicago State held advantages in digs (35-31) and blocks (9-8). Both teams recorded five aces and Utah Valley held just a 41-39 advantage in kills. The difference came in hitting errors. Utah Valley recorded just 12 to Chicago State's 21.

Podwell combined her match-high 10 kills with four block assists. Brewer totaled 17 assists, eight digs and five kills.

Utah Valley improves to 12-7 (4-0 GWC). Chicago State is now 2-22 (0-5 GWC). The Cougars stay in Orem, Utah for a non-conference contest against CSU Bakersfield on Saturday. The neutral site contest will be played at Utah Valley University.
