Volleyball Falls to Host Butler in Three Sets

INDIANAPOLIS – Chicago State volleyball took a break from tournament play here this evening with a mid-week contest against Horizon League member Butler at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The host Bulldogs (2-6) defeated the Cougars (1-8) in four sets by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-15.
 
The Green and White opened the match with a 4-2 lead thanks to a kill by junior Sydney Van Munster (Hudsonville, Mich./Portland) (Hudsonville, Mich.). Butler would use a 14-4 scoring run to break a 6-6 tie midway through the first set to claim a 20-10 lead following a CSU hitting error en route to gaining a 1-0 lead.
 
A 7-0 run began the second set for the home team with sophomore Maggie Harbison tallying six service points during the stretch, but the Cougars pulled within seven at 13-6 after Van Munster posted a kill to ended a run in which both squads recorded six points apiece. The Bulldogs headed into intermission with a 2-0 match advantage after finishing the set with a 12-4 scoring drive.
 
The third set saw both teams battle through three ties before CSU used a 4-0 run to gain an 8-4 advantage that concluded with a kill by Van Munster. The Cougars twice increased their leading margins to 9-5 on a freshman Emily Kramolisch (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) (Bolingbrook, Ill.) kill and 11-8 following a kill from junior Rachel Levitt (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) (Willow Springs, Ill.). BU later snapped a 15-15 tie by scoring 10 of the final 15 points to win the match.
 
Playing in her hometown for the first match as a collegian, freshman Angelica Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) (Indianapolis, Ind.) paced Chicago State's offense with 14 assists, while sophomore Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev.) and Kramolisch led the defense with 12 digs and 10 digs, respectively. Senior Alexandra Mason (Beaverton, OR/Harper College) (Beaverton, Ore.) tallied six kills and Van Munster finished with five kills for the Green and White.
 
Freshman Kelly Kyle led Butler with a match-leading 15 kills and two service aces on the evening, and junior Gina Vera produced a match-best 38 assists. Senior Maureen Bamiro added eight kills with a match-high four block assists.
 
CSU travels to Iowa City, Iowa this weekend for the Hawkeye Invitational #2, hosted by the University of Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena beginning Friday night against the host Hawkeyes with the first serve at 7 p.m.
