CHICAGO – Senior Tressa Beckel (Waseca, Minn./Wisconsin) (Waseca, Minn.) scored a career-high 28 points to lead Chicago State women's basketball to a 79-46 win over Utah Valley in the Great West Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
The Cougars evened their record to 8-8 (1-0) with the win, while the Wolverines saw their season mark drop to 1-14 (0-1).
Beckel connected on 12-of-21 shooting from the field and went 4-of-5 from the free throw line in addition to posting nine rebounds and a game-high five steals. Senior Courtney Waldon (Sun Prairie, WI/Sun Prairie) (Sun Prairie, Wis.) added 16 points, and junior Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) added 11 points, a game-high eight assists and four steals.
Senior Elana Wroten (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) (Chicago, Ill.) contributed a game-leading 10 rebounds, junior Natalie Marlowe (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) (South Milwaukee, Wis.) scored nine points and tied a career high with seven assists, and senior Caila Desroches (Long Island, NY/Monroe CC) (Long Island, N.Y.) scored eight points.
Utah Valley was led by freshman Whitney Jenkins as she scored 13 points and junior Abbie Beutler added 12 points.
CSU is back in action on Thursday as it continues its five-game homestand with a Great West contest against Houston Baptist. The opening tip from the Dickens Center begins at 5 p.m.
