MADISON, Wis. – Chicago State volleyball closed out the InnTowner Invitational on Sept. 4 with a pair of three-set losses at the UW Field House on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
The Cougars (0-7) fell to the host Badgers by scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-13 in their first match of the day before dropping a 25-7, 25-11, 25-17 decision to Duquesne (5-2) in the tournament finale.
Senior Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the CSU offense with 18 assists and added a pair of block assists versus Wisconsin, while freshman Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill.) added five kills and fellow classmate Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev.) recorded 10 digs.
Sophomore trio Kirby Toon, Bailey Reshel and Mary Ording each tallied a match-leading eight kills to pace Wisconsin's offensive effort. Fellow sophomore Kelsey Maloney added a match-high five block assists, senior Jessa Benson recorded a match-leading 27 assists, and senior Kim Kuzma posted a match-best 11 digs for the Badgers.
In the Duquesne contest, junior Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.) recorded a team-best five kills and added six digs for Chicago State. Minta added 14 assists with five digs and Townsell posted a match-best 12 digs en route to capturing all-tournament team honors.
The Dukes were led by freshman Allison Foschia's 10 kills and junior Liz Homan's five blocks, both match-high totals. Junior Sarah Svorinic dished out a match-leading 26 assists and senior Amy Palko notched 11 digs.
CSU opens its 11-match home slate this Thursday with a non-conference battle against Radford with a special start time of 12 p.m.
