CHICAGO – The Chicago State volleyball team kicked off a two-match homestand tonight with a 3-0 (16-25, 6-25, 13-25) non-conference defeat to visiting Valparaiso at the Jacoby Dickens Center. The Crusaders improved their season record to 24-6 and the Cougars' season record fell to 0-28.
Junior Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.) nearly posted a double-double as she recorded 10 assists and a match-high nine digs to lead CSU. Freshman Mysta Townsell (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) (Gardnerville, Nev.) recorded eight digs, while freshman Valeria Desiderio (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) (Chicago Heights, Ill.) added six digs and four kills and junior Alexandra Mason (Beaverton, OR/Harper College) (Beaverton, Ore.) posted three blocks.
Freshman Janelle Hobbs and junior Amy Groesbeck each recorded seven kills to lead Valparaiso with Hobbs adding a match-best five block assists and Groesbeck produced seven digs. Junior Jenny Pokorny dished out a match-high 18 assists and freshman Ariel Cudney tallied five service aces.
CSU closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon with a Great West Conference battle at the Dickens Center against Utah Valley with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
