PEORIA, Ill. – Chicago State volleyball kicked off its 2009 schedule earlier this afternoon by dropping a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13) decision to IUPUI (2-0) in its first contest of the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic, hosted by Bradley, at the Merkin Center in Peoria, Ill.
IUPUI opened the match with a 6-2 lead following a kill from senior Ashley Johnson, but the Cougars responded by scoring five of the next eight points to close within a point at 9-8 thanks to three kills from redshirt senior Shamara Clark (Bloomington, IN/South) (Bloomington, Ind.) during the run. A 12-1 scoring run opened things up for the Jaguars which included three service aces from sophomore Shari Bernhardt to regain the lead at 21-9. Junior Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) recorded a kill and a service ace to pull CSU within 21-11 before IUPUI scored four of the final five points to close out the set.
The Cougars then transformed an early 3-0 deficit in the second set to capture a 9-5 lead following a 9-2 run that included five service points and two aces from sophomore Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.). CSU later increased its lead to 11-6 after kills from freshman Kimberly Naut (Reno, NV/Galena) (Reno, Nev.) and senior Jessica Schmidt (Walnut Hill, IL/Kaskaskia College) (Walnut Hill, Ill.). IUPUI bounced back by tallying 14 of the set's final 24 points which included two more service aces from Bernhardt to head into intermission with a two-set lead.
In the third set, IUPUI used a 14-5 scoring drive behind three kills from junior Jessica Phelps and five service points by senior Monica Suding to claim a 23-12 lead en route to the victory.
Naut nearly recorded a double-double in her first collegiate match as she posted 10 digs and eight kills for CSU. Senior Jean Keenan (/) (Braidwood, Ill.) also notched 10 digs, while Clark finished with nine digs and five kills, and Maziveyi posted a career-best four service aces. Minta produced 12 assists and six digs, and Schmidt tallied three kills with a 1.000 hitting percentage.
IUPUI was led by Goodnight's double-double of 31 assists and 11 digs, and sophomore Kalyse Reimbold posted a match-high 10 kills. Bernhardt added a match-best 12 digs and five aces, while junior Lauran Thompson added 11 digs and Suding contributed six kills for the Jaguars.
CSU is back in action later this evening with its second contest in Peoria versus host Bradley with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
