CHARLESTON, Ill. - Chicago State volleyball closed the Holiday Inn Express Panther Challenge at Eastern Illinois today as it dropped a pair of matches to in-state teams. The Cougars fell to the host Panthers, 3-0 (25-19, 25-26, 25-21), in their first contest of the day and lost a three-set decision (25-12,25-14, 25-14) in their tournament finale to Western Illinois.
Senior Jessica Schmidt (Walnut Hill, IL/Kaskaskia College) (Walnut Hill, Ill.) led Chicago State with 10 kills against EIU. Sophomore Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) produced a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs, while redshirt junior Shamara Clark (Bloomington, IN/South) (Bloomington, Ind.) tallied a match-high 17 digs, junior Jean Keenan (/) (Braidwood, Ill.) recorded a match-best three service aces and junior Chy Crichton (The Dalles, OR/Mt. Hood CC) (The Dalles, Ore.) contributed 10 digs.
Freshman Hannah Deterding paced EIU with a double-double of 25 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore Alex Zwettler recorded 10 kills. Freshman Brittany Wallace contributed 13 digs, and fellow classmate Melanie Boykins added eight kills and a match-best four block assists. Sophomore Erin Hake posted 10 digs for the Panthers.
In the WIU match, Clark recorded a match-best nine kills with seven digs for the Cougars. Crichton notched a match-high 15 digs, while Minta posted 19 assists and junior Niena Posey (Chicago, IL/Lincoln College) (Chicago, Ill.) tallied five kills. Freshman Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.) added four kills and two block assists.
Senior Sarah Trimpe tallied a double-double of 30 assists and 11 digs in pacing the Westerwind offense to a .330 hitting percentage for the match. Freshman Cait Egan and senior Monique Houston each recorded eight kills with Houston also producing three block assists. Junior Elise Crnjak added 11 digs and freshman Brooke Stittleburg notched 10 digs.
Minta was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 4.89 assists and 3.00 digs per set over the weekend.
Next up for CSU is a midweek match at in-city rival Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday evening with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
