Volleyball Drops Three-Set Decision to Western Illinois

CHICAGO (Sept. 16, 2008) –
Freshman Megan Toczek posted a match-high 10 kills as visiting Western Illinois claimed a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-16) victory over Chicago State tonight at the Jacoby Dickens Center. The Westerwinds improved to 4-8 on the year, while the Cougars dropped to 0-12.

Redshirt junior Shamara Clark (Bloomington, IN/South) (Bloomington, Ind.) tied for top match honors with 10 kills and added seven digs to lead CSU. Sophomore Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) produced 14 assists and six kills, while junior Chy Crichton (The Dalles, OR/Mt. Hood CC) (The Dalles, Ore.) recorded 13 digs and senior Jessica Schmidt (Walnut Hill, IL/Kaskaskia College) (Walnut Hill, Ill.) posted four digs.

WIU posted a .519 hitting percentage in the first set and a .478 hitting clip in the second set en route to an early two-set advantage heading into intermission.

In addition to Toczek, the Westerwinds also received nine kills from junior Erin Frick and three block assists by freshman Cait Egan. Senior Sarah Trimpe tallied a match-best 31 assists and added five kills as WIU finished the match with a .407 hitting clip, while freshman Allison Gilbert contributed six kills. Junior Elise Crnjak produced a match-high 18 digs to lead the Westerwind defense.

The Cougars head to Ohio this weekend to compete in the Kent State/Mizuno Open at the MAC Center beginning Friday afternoon against Ohio State with the first serve set for 3:30 p.m.
