CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball concluded the second day of the Cougar Invitational with a pair of losses today at the Jacoby Dickens Center. The Cougars fell to Providence (10-10) in four sets (27-25, 11-25, 15-25, 11-25) in their first match of the day before closing the tournament with a 3-0 loss (17-25, 20-25, 12-25) to SIU Edwardsville (5-7).
In the Providence contest, redshirt junior Shamara Clark (Bloomington, IN/South) (Bloomington, Ind.) tallied her first double-double of the year with a season-best 13 kills and 14 digs to lead Chicago State. Sophomore Hanya Minta (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) notched 17 assists and junior Chy Crichton (The Dalles, OR/Mt. Hood CC) (The Dalles, Ore.) recorded 16 digs. Freshman Mazvita Maziveyi (Harare, Zimbabwe/Hillside (NC)) (Durham, N.C.) added six kills and two service aces, while junior Megan Granko (Lockport, IL/Lincoln College) (Lockport, Ill.) posted seven digs.
The Friars were led by senior Jeanette Toney, who posted 20 kills, nine digs and three solo blocks. Senior Sara Sheehan contributed a match-high 42 assists to go along with nine digs, while senior Elizabeth Flynn produced 17 kills. Senior Aida Cadres posted a match-best five service aces, while sophomore Emily Morris recorded nine digs and three service aces.
Clark also posted a match-high nine kills and 12 digs in the nightcap versus SIUE, while Crichton added a double-double with 11 assists and 10 digs with a pair of block assists and two service aces for CSU. Junior Niena Posey (Chicago, IL/Lincoln College) (Chicago, Ill.) recorded five kills and Minta finished with eight assists.
Senior Emily Rahn led the SIUE Cougars with eight kills, while fellow classmate Mallory Clements recorded 19 assists. Sophomore Sydney Winslow posted seven kills, freshman Kelly Farrell recorded 12 assists and junior Jenny Gilman added 10 digs.
The all-tournament team consisted of Clark, Clements, Rahn, Toney, Providence's Kelly Krahenbuhl and Quinnipiac's Kayla Lawler.
The Cougars travel west to Utah this Tuesday for a midweek match at Utah Valley with the first serve set for 8 p.m.
