Women’s Basketball Falls to Seattle at Home in Tough WAC Battle

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball opened its weekend Western Athletic Conference homestand tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center with a hard-fought battle against Seattle. The visiting Redhawks would escape with a 63-56 victory over the Green and White despite CSU having three players score in double figures.

The home team started the game with a 6-2 advantage at the 7:20 mark of the first quarter thanks to redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) hitting a pair of free throws. SU then went on a quick 9-2 run in a near four-minute span to claim an 11-8 lead with 3:24 remaining before Chicago State closed out the stanza by scoring five of the next seven points in the last 2:38 to even the score at 13-13.

Kaillin Spiller scored three points for Seattle as the visitors claimed a 16-13 lead with 8:35 left in the second quarter, but a 23-10 scoring drive over eight minutes propelled the Cougars to a 36-23 halftime lead with redshirt sophomore Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain) tallied 10 points during the run.

CSU maintained its double-digit advantage throughout the third quarter and eventually took its biggest leading margin at the 1:42 mark on a layup from sophomore Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) for a 47-30 advantage. Seattle then rebounded in the fourth quarter by opening with a 20-3 run over five minutes to even the score at 50-50 with 4:53 left and closed out the game with a 13-3 drive that broke a 53-53 tie in the final three minutes to earn the win.

The Green and White produced advantages in assists (17-9), blocked shots (5-2), bench points (12-0) and fast break points (4-2) while both teams each recorded 36 rebounds in the game.

Mata Boix led Chicago State with 20 points and blocked a game-high three shots while shooting 9-of-14 from the field and finished with seven rebounds. Johnson contributed 13 points and played all 40 minutes, and senior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Cliff recorded a career-high 12 points and connected on 5-of-7 from the field and equaled another career high with two blocked shots.

Alexis Montgomery led all scorers with 26 points for Seattle.
