Chicago State Men’s Hoops Releases Schedule for 2017-18 Season

2017-18 Men's Basketball Schedule

CHICAGO – Chicago State University men's basketball will play 11 home games at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center while facing off against four in-state Division I teams as eighth-year head coach Tracy Dildy announced the release of his team's 2017-18 game schedule today.

The Green and White will take to the hardwood versus opposition from various conferences that include the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Horizon League, Mid-American and Missouri Valley. CSU is also going to take part in the 2017 Battle 4 Atlantis Mainland Tournament that will take place mid-November in Baltimore, Md., and 11 of its opponents competed in the postseason this past spring with five playing in the NCAA Tournament.

"This is clearly the toughest schedule that we've had in seven-plus seasons. Basically, you look at the fact that most of our non-conference opponents played in a postseason tournament a year ago and that alone make this a demanding schedule," said Dildy.

Chicago State opens its slate with four of its first five contests on the road against Iowa (Nov. 10), Purdue (Nov. 12), Notre Dame (Nov. 16) and Northern Iowa (Nov. 18) with a Nov. 14 home opener versus Silver Lake (Wis.) at the Jones Convocation Center slotted between those road contests. The Purdue and Northern Iowa contests serve as the first two games for CSU in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.

Following a home game against East-West on Nov. 21, the Cougars then travel to Baltimore for the Battle 4 Atlantis Mainland tourney, where they join host Maryland-Baltimore County, Nicholls State and Presbyterian. CSU concludes November with road games at Drake (Nov. 26) and Marquette (Nov. 29).

The Green and White then hit the road again in December with games at Oakland (Dec. 9), Northwestern (Dec. 11), SIUE (Dec. 19), Wisconsin (Dec. 28) and Western Michigan (Dec. 30), while hosting in-state rivals Northern Illinois (Dec. 2) and Bradley (Dec. 16) at the JCC.

"I think that playing in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament is just all about the experience for our players as they get to play at high-caliber schools such as Purdue and Northern Iowa then go to Maryland-Baltimore County on the East Coast, which is just a historical area for starters," said Dildy. "Everything that we do is strategically planned where it is a great experience that can also be educational."

Chicago State begins its Western Athletic Conference slate on Jan. 6 against New Mexico State at the JCC followed by a weekend road swing in the Pacific Northwest against Seattle (Jan. 9) and Utah Valley (Jan. 11). A three-game homestand finishes off the first month of 2018 with Grand Canyon (Jan. 18), CSU Bakersfield (Jan. 20) and UT Rio Grande Valley (Jan. 27) all visiting the Windy City.

The month of February sees the Green and White on the road for WAC contests at CSU Bakersfield (Feb. 1), Grand Canyon (Feb. 3), UMKC (Feb. 15), New Mexico State (Feb. 22) and UT Rio Grande Valley (Feb. 24) to go along with playing at home versus Utah Valley on Feb. 9 and Seattle on Feb. 11.

CSU's regular season finale will take place on March 3 with the women's team for a Senior Day doubleheader at the JCC against UMKC which begins at 2 p.m.

The Cougars then head to Las Vegas for the WAC Tournament, which will be held on March 8-10 at the Orleans Arena for the eighth straight year.

"We've got a lot of exciting things happening (within the program) and the coaching staff is ready for the season to start now. This schedule I feel will help us in the long run in terms of us winning the WAC championship and making the NCAA Tournament," added Dildy. "I'm really excited about the direction we're going that includes all of our games being broadcast online via the new Chicago State Radio Network."

Seven letterwinners return to the team from last season that includes two starters in junior guard Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) and sophomore center Patrick Szpir (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling). The Cougars also bring in seven newcomers with three players that sat out the 2016-17 campaign as redshirts.
