Michael Benson joined the Chicago State tennis programs as a volunteer assistant coach in January 2013.

Benson is a club professional at the North Shore Racquet Club. He trained Illinois High School Association state champions Chrissie Nolan and Sam Barnett.
 
From 2000-01 Benson was the head men's tennis coach at DePaul. He helped his No. 1 singles player qualify for the 2001 NCAA Tournament and finish No. 46 nationally.  Benson spent 1986-89 as an assistant coach for the University of Kentucky. He helped produce Kentucky's first 10 NCAA All-American honorees.  After leaving Kentucky, Mike served as a coach for Team Borg in Singapore from 1989-90. Among his duties was coaching the Malaysian National Team who he helped guide to a Davis Cup win.
 
Benson is a lifetime member of the United States Tennis Association. He reached a men's open singles ranking as high as No. 17 in 2009. His high doubles ranking was No. 9 in 2008. In the Midwest rankings, he held the No. 3 spot in singles in 2010-11 and was ranked No. 1 in doubles 2006-08 and in 2010.
 
He lectured and taught group clinics in six countries as a member of the Association of Tennis Professionals from 1984-89. He held an ATP ranking of No. 297 in doubles and No. 386 in singles.
 
Benson is a 1983 graduate of Brown and also earned a master's degree from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill. in 1996.
