Katrina Brumfield was named director of track & field for the Cougars on December 1, 2023, overseeing the men’s and women’s cross country programs, the indoor men’s and women’s track & field programs and the outdoor men’s and women's track & field programs.
Brumfield comes to Chicago State with over a decade of coaching experience at five different schools, most recently serving as an assistant head track & field coach at Madonna University (2023), a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school competing in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). She was the head track and field coach at Oakland University for five years (2018-23) and was at Youngstown University for six years (2012-18), serving as an assistant track and field coach and academic advisor where she was responsible for jumps and multi-event student-athletes.
During her tenure at Oakland, Brumfield helped the men’s and women’s programs finish no lower than third at the Horizon League Conference Championships while both the men’s & women’s teams achieved numerous individual and relay conference champions and in the process rewrote a majority of the school's records. In addition, both teams received Academic All-Americans & academic honors. Brumfield's event coaching responsibilities were hurdles, jumps and multi-events. The men’s high jump group was nationally-ranked in the top 15 in both indoor and outdoor during her last three seasons overseeing the events and she also coached a total of 35 individual Horizon League champions, including six athletes of the year, five Horizon League Outstanding Performers, five newcomers of the year and seven NCAA East Regional Preliminary qualifiers.
Prior to Oakland, Brumfield helped Youngstown State to 15 Horizon League championships consisting of five consecutive women’s outdoor, four women’s indoor and three men’s indoor and outdoor titles. She coached a total of 29 individual Horizon League champions including one league Outstanding Performer, eight Newcomers of the Year and nine NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers in the high jump.
Brumfield began her coaching career at Utica College where she helped establish the jumps program as an assistant coach and then spent two seasons at Millersville University where she coached six NCAA Division II national qualifiers and four all-conference selections along with numerous conference qualifiers and school record holders.
Brumfield competed collegiately in track and field and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communication with dual emphasis of Public Relations & Broadcasting from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania in 2008. She was a three-time All-Conference and Scholar Athlete selection and NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship high jump qualifier in 2007. In 2008, she was named Mansfield Athletic Department Athlete of the Year and Most Valuable Player for the indoor and outdoor seasons along with earning the Who’s Who Among American Colleges and University Students distinction.
Brumfield is married to husband Ryan Marsom, and the couple has two sons, Greyson and Nehemiah.
