John Ely

    Volunteer Assistant Coach
John Ely enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Chicago State baseball program and he will work with the team’s pitchers and catchers.

Ely joins the Cougars after recently completing an eight-year professional career as a pitcher after being drafted in the third round (119th overall selection) by the Chicago White Sox in the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft. He played three seasons with the White Sox organization that included being named Southern League Pitcher of the Year in 2009 with the Birmingham Barons.

After being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010, Ely played three seasons in Major League Baseball and captured Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year accolades with the Albuquerque Isotopes in 2012. He also played in the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers organizations before starting his collegiate coaching career.

Ely played in two seasons at Miami (Ohio) where he led the Mid-American Conference in strikeouts (108) and complete games (six) as a freshman in 2005 en route to earning Second Team All-MAC and Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors.
