The 2012-13 season will be the second for Kyle Stefan as head coach of the Chicago State women’s golf program. Stefan was hired in September of 2011 after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Detroit.
Stefan’s hard work and enthusiasm were evident as Detroit claimed the 2010 Horizon League Championship and finished as the league’s runner-up in 2011.
He was involved in all aspects of practice, travel, tournament preparation and recruiting and played a major role in the Titans winning the 2010 Horizon League Championship, as well as reaching the highest Golfstat ranking in program history in 2011.
The Titans also captured two regular season events – the 2010 Detroit Titans Invitational and the 2011 IPFW Spring Classic – during Stefan’s tenure. He was the lead recruiter for six players, including four from Canada and the program’s first Michigan Super Team signee.
He served as tournament director of the Detroit Titans Invitational and the inaugural Sunshine Spring Classic, which was held in Sanford, Florida, in 2010, instituted the program’s annual summer golf camps, and is also a voter for the GolfWorld/NGCA Coaches' Poll.
Stefan is a graduate of Wayne State University, where he played golf in 2008-09 and was named to the Coach’s Honor Roll while majoring in finance. He also spent two years on the golf team (2004-06) at Olivet College before transferring to WSU.
He helped WSU to the Super Regional Championship and first ever NCAA Finals appearance, where the Warriors finished 13th nationally, averaging 78.90 strokes in 10 events.
In addition to playing at the college level, Stefan – whose sister Alainna was an All-Horizon League golfer and HL medalist at UDM – also served as an assistant boys’ golf coach at Detroit Jesuit High School, where he spent three seasons on the varsity golf team during his high school days. Stefan helped the Cubs to a regional championship in 2003, and served as team captain as a senior. He qualified for the Michigan Junior Amateur Championship on three occasions.
As a varsity assistant coach at Detroit Jesuit, Stefan helped the Cubs qualify for the state finals three times, finishing eighth in 2009 - the schools' best finish in the modern area. The school also won the 2008 Catholic League Central Division and 2008 Regional, while all three teams were named Academic All-State during his tenure. He was the recipient of the 2010 Gerald R. Diehl award for outstanding service to the varsity golf program at Detroit Jesuit High School.
Outside of Detroit, he was the tournament director for the Detroit Golf Club Invitational, the Wayne County Championship and the U of D Jesuit Sunday Shootout. He helped fundraise for Joseph Juszczyk’s professional golf career, and caddied for Joseph at the 2009 and 2010 U.S. Amateurs, along with the Gateway Tour, U.S. Open Sectionals, Nationwide and PGA Tour Monday Qualifiers.
While at Wayne State, Stefan worked as "editor-in-chief" for The South End, the school’s student newspaper. He operated a basketball Web site, dethoops.com, for three seasons and has been published as a sports writer in the Battle Creek Enquirer, Warrior Within Magazine, and CSTV.com, among other publications. He also volunteered as a member of the Media Operations group when UDM hosted the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional and 2009 Final Four.
Kyle is an apprentice member of the PGA of America.
