CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago St. (8-21, 7-9 NEC) fell to Long Island University (18-9, 13-3 NEC), 83-68, at the Jones Convocation Center. CSU recorded 13 steals in the game but was unable to overcome LIU's 22 second-chance points.
The first quarter began with a balanced exchange, but the Cougars gained momentum midway through the frame.
Kyara Champagne's fast-break layup at 8:38 and
Keona McGee's layup shortly after allowed CSU to establish an early lead.
Kayla Mount contributed significantly, scoring multiple times in the paint, including a jumper at 3:38, extending Chicago State's advantage to 14-7. Despite LIU's efforts to close the gap, the Cougars maintained control through defensive pressure, forcing eight turnovers. The quarter ended with CSU leading 17-14.
The Cougars attempted to regain control in the second quarter with a strong interior presence, scoring eight points in the paint.
Brianna Hill was a key defensive players for the Cougars and was rewarded with a layup that narrowed the gap, LIU's perimeter shooting proved decisive. However, multiple three-pointers helped LIU maintain momentum. Chicago State trailed 36-30 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Chicago State showcased resilience with
Tania Allen leading a key offensive push, scoring a layup at 9:25 assisted by
Keona McGee, narrowing the gap to four points early. Despite LIU's effort to extend their lead, Allen again contributed with a defensive rebound and a fast-break layup at 6:04, maintaining pressure on the visitors. McGee added crucial points from the free-throw line, cutting the deficit to five with 1:26 remaining. The quarter ended with both teams scoring 21 points, leaving the game at 57–51 in favor of the Sharks
In the fourth quarter, CSU entered with determination, narrowing the gap to single digits with
Chloe Sisco's 3-pointer at the 8:59 mark. McGee contributed significantly with a three-pointer and a layup on a fast break, keeping the pressure on LIU. However, LIU's consistent scoring, including multiple trips to the free-throw line, maintained its lead. The Cougars tried to rally late, but the final moments saw LIU extend its advantage, concluding the game with an 83–68 victory.
Keona McGee scored 19 points and recorded five assists, adding five steals to her performance.
Kayla Mount also contributed with a career high 19 points, making seven field goals and converting 5 of 6 free throws.
Brianna Hill collected seven rebounds and tallied three steals.
Tania Allen added eight points and secured five rebounds.
