Women's Basketball Falls to Cleveland State in Season Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Chicago State women's basketball opened their 2025 season with a trip to Cleveland to battle the Cleveland State Vikings. The Cougars fought to the very end with very good things to look towards as the season progresses. It was well balanced scoring attack for the Cougars as nine different players scored. Preseason All-NEC selection Aiyanna Culver led the Cougars in scoring on the night with 18 points. Despite the hard effort by Chicago State, Cleveland State prevailed in the season opener to defeated Chicago State 71-49.

Chicago State got within one in the first quarter with a quick 5-0 burst led by Aiyanna Culver and Kayla Mount. Cleveland State was able to answer the short run to lead after one period 20-11. The Cougars continued to fight with back to back three pointers by Chloe Sisco in the second quarter and trailed going into the halftime break 38-25. The third quarter saw 11 third quarter points led by Culver and Mount. Culver had six points in the third and Mount with three points. The Cougars scored 13 points in the fourth to end on a high note with a three point bucket by Culver as the game ended by a score of 71-49.

Aiyanna Culver led the Cougars with 18 points. Kyla Mount had seven points, with Chloe Sisco and Kyara Champagne finishing with six points each. Sisco and Jade Hamilton-Gill led the team with four rebounds each. While Kace Urlacher led with three assists. Kayla Mount and Elani Randall each had two blocks as well. The Cougars had 12 points in the paint and 10 points off of turnovers. Chicago State also hit the boards hard in the game to finish with 35 total rebounds, with 16 offensive rebounds. Those second chances helped the Cougars earn 14 second chance rebounds. the Cougars also had amazing production off the bench with 20 total bench points.

The Cougars will have a quick turnaround as they return to action for their home opener on Wednesday November 5 as they host Winthrop University for their Education Day Game. Tip-off from the Emil and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center is set for 11:00 AM (CT).
