Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Two Cougars Score in Double Figures in Loss Against St. Francis

The Chicago State women's basketball team faced off against the St. Francis Saints and suffered a tough 72-62 loss.

Laura Segues finished with 20 points while Janiah Newell tallied 15, and Taylor Norris along with Tae'Lor Willard added on seven.

First Quarter - St. Francis 22, Chicago State 19

  • Both teams came out hot as they scored back-and-forth leading to a 6-6 tie
  • The Saints then scored a deuce, however the Cougars came back as Segues hit a trey along with a layup from Haklicka to reach a minimal lead at 11-8
  • Unfortunately, the Saints suddenly exploded with a 9-0 run to retain the lead at 17-11
  • Chicago State then managed to outscore the Saints 8-5 to finish the quarter however were still trailing 22-19

Second Quarter - St. Francis 41, Chicago State 27

  • The Saints continued their streak as they began with a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 32-19
  • The Cougars then cut that run with a beautiful trey from Segues to reach a 32-22 score
  • However, the Saints bounced right back and went into halftime outscoring the Cougars 9-5 and with a 41-27 lead

Third Quarter - St. Francis 58, Chicago State 48

  • The quarter began once again with both teams going coast to coast as they reached a score of 54-36 with Chicago State trailing
  • Fortunately, the Cougars suddenly put up a defensive clinic as they outscored the Saints 12-4 to finish the quarter
  • Segues, Norris, Newell, and Myers all converted buckets throughout this run to trail by ten to head into the fourth and final quarter

Fourth Quarter - St. Francis 72, Chicago State 62

  • The Cougars continued their hot streak as they went on to outscore the Saints 8-2 to start the quarter and now only trail by 6 at 58-52 as Norris, Willard, Segues, and Newell all scored
  • Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Saints regained their momentum and finished the game with a 72-62 win

The Cougars next take on the University of Northwestern tomorrow at 7 PM in Evanston, IL.

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
