NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Chicago State women's basketball team (4-16, 3-8 WAC) dropped its matchup with Stephen F. Austin, 84-55, Thursday in a road battle.
Quentarra Mitchell and Allysah Boothe each piled up 12 points, while Aaliyah Collins scored five points and dropped in six assists. Christina Britter added eight points and five boards.
On the evening, CSU turned the ball over 27 times.
The Lumberjacks scored the first five points before CSU racked up a scoring spurt keyed by Kyjai Miles and a Boothe three. Mitchell then heated up with a few jumpers, and the Cougars pulled to within 15-13 at the 2:30 mark. A Laura Segues trey and a slew of SFA buckets led to a 24-16 Lumberjack lead after one.
In quarter two, SFA began to pull away. Britter opened the quarter with a CSU layup, but then the Lumberjacks went on a 9-0 run to take a 33-18 lead. The lead ballooned to 20, at 42-22, by halftime, as both Aiyana Johnson and Stephanie Visscher powered the SFA attack.
Miles and Mitchell led the CSU attack from the inside as the third started, while Boothe nailed another three at the 5:04 mark. But SFA held firm, stifling the Cougars en route to a 55-39 lead through three.
In the fourth quarter, the Lumberjacks held firm, ballooning their lead to 77-44 by the 3:45 mark on a Brionna Scott three. Boothe and Taylor Norris scored for the Cougars down the stretch, who eventually fell, 84-55.
The Cougars' Texas two-step continues Saturday at 3:00 p.m. as the Cougars face Sam Houston for the first time in program history. Chicago State then returns home to face Stephen F. Austin again on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6:00 p.m.
