CARBONDALE, IL - The Chicago State women's basketball team faced off against the Southern Illinois Salukis and suffered a 115-57 loss.
Three Cougars managed to score in double-figures as Ana Haklicka and Ahlea Myers finished with fifteen points each, while Josie Hill added on fourteen of her own.
First Quarter - Southern Illinois 32, Chicago State 12
- The Salukis began with a 5-0 run to lead very early on in the first
- The Cougars then answered back with a 3-2 rally with a free throw made from Laura Segues and a layup from Haklicka
- Nonetheless, the Salukis continued scoring and managed to obtain a 12-3 lead with five minutes to go
- Both teams then went on a back-and-forth scoring run with the Cougars outscoring them 6-5
- Unfortunately, the Salukis still maintained their lead and ended up leading by twenty at the end of the first with a 32-12 score
Second Quarter - Southern Illinois 60, Chicago State 29
- The Cougars opened up the scoring with a beautiful trey from Ahlea Myers
- However, the Salukis answered back and went on a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 37-15
- Chicago State then managed to hit two free throws at the charity stripe and a driving layup from Josie Hill to reach a score of 19-37
- The Salukis then managed to outscore the Cougars 22-10 as they remained in the lead at the half
Third Quarter - Southern Illinois 88, Chicago State 45
- The Cougars opened up the scoring after a swift layup from Janiah Newell
- The Salukis quickly answered back and hit a deuce of their own to increase their lead to 62-31
- Chicago State then went on a 6-2 rally thanks to two made free throws and a layup from Hill yet again, and also a drive from Haklicka
- The Cougars managed to finish the quarter with two points at the charity stripe from Haklicka, however the Salukis won comfortably at 88-45
Fourth Quarter -
- The Salukis began with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 94-45
- Chicago State then were able to cut the rally and open up their fourth quarter scoring with a trey from Myers followed by a layup from Laura Segues
- Southern Illinois then managed to outscore the Cougars 9-21 which ultimately cemented their win as they took the win comfortably at 115-57
The CSU women's basketball team will wrap up a busy week with a home game against North Carolina Central on Saturday, December 3 at 1 p.m. at the JCC. It will be Girls Day Out/HBCU Pack the House Day at the Jones Convocation Center. This will be the third meeting between the two teams with each team previously claiming one victory. They played in back-to-back seasons in 2008-09 and 2009-10, with NCCU claiming a 68-47 win in Chicago on January 10, 2009 while the Cougars rebounded the following season and won 77-64 at NCCU on February 20, 2010. NCCU enters the week with a 2-4 record and play Elon Sunday and at West Virginia Wednesday before heading to the JCC to face Chicago State.
