CHICAGO — The Chicago State women's basketball team (0-12, 0-9 WAC) dropped a 73-40 contest to the New Mexico State Aggies (7-11, 5-6 WAC) Friday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars jumped out to a quick lead but a seven-minute scoring drought to end the first quarter created a deficit too large to overcome.
Ana Haklicka kickstarted the scoring for the Cougars with a three on the first possession of the game and, following a New Mexico State score, Haklicka converted a layup. Chicago State led 5-2 with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Cougars then failed to score for the remainder of the quarter, going 0-for-7 from the field. The Aggies took advantage of the scoring drought, converting 8-of-16 shots, including 2-of-4 from behind the three-point line and led by 14 after one quarter of play.
The Cougars snapped the scoring drought with a pair of
Christina Britter free throws 37 seconds into the quarter. She scored on a driving layup on the next possession, was fouled, and converted a three-point play to cut the lead to 12, 22-10. The Aggies then went on a 9-2 run to extend the lead to their largest of the game, 31-12. Britter continued her strong quarter with another old-school three-point play and a late free throw by
Precious Adediran rounded out the first-half scoring for the Cougars, who trailed 36-17 at the half. Britter scored 10 points, converting all four of her free throw attempts, and pulled down five rebounds in the quarter.
New Mexico State continued to distance themselves from Chicago State in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 15-4 over the first half of the period. Britter contributed all four CSU points and was the game's leading scorer with 14 points after three and half quarters.
Britter led all players with 18 points and eight rebounds. Haklicka also registered double figures with 12, and
Leilani Moncrease added six.
The same two teams will square off tomorrow, Saturday, March 6, at 1 p.m., in the last regular-season game for both teams before the WAC Tournament scheduled to begin Wednesday, March 10 in Las Vegas.
