Utah Valley Closes Strong to Beat Out Cougars

Webb and Britter each tally double figures

OREM, UTAH — Facing Utah Valley for the second consecutive evening, the Chicago State women's basketball fell, 56-46, to the Wolverines Saturday at the UCCU Center.

Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) and Christina Britter (Dunlap, IL/Dunlap ) each scored in double figures for Chicago State, both earning season-high totals in the process.

Throughout the first quarter, Chicago State's zone defense dictated a methodical tempo. After the teams traded the first two buckets of the game, the Cougars unleashed a 7-0 run. During the stretch, Christina Britter (Dunlap, IL/Dunlap ), Leilani Moncrease (Oakland, CA/Moreau Catholic) and Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) all drilled baskets. Utah Valley then pulled to within four, trailing 11-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Typically a strong three-point shooting team, the Wolverines missed all seven trey attempts in the first.

Ana Haklicka (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Touristic and Catering School ) nailed a three from the right wing to kick off the second quarter and give Chicago State a 14-7 lead. Utah Valley then pieced together a few makes, including a Madison Grange three-ball, to pull to within two points at the under-five timeout. Out of the break, Haklicka splashed in a three before UVU's Nehaa Sohail answered with a downtown jumper of her own. After another Haklicka bucket, the Wolverines kickstarted a half-ending 8-2 run to take a 25-23 lead into the locker room. At the break, Haklicka paced all scorers with eight points.

Christina Britter (Dunlap, IL/Dunlap ), who scored a career high 11 points on Friday, started the third quarter by converting an and-one layup to give Chicago State a 26-25 lead. A few minutes later, a Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) layup made the score 29-28 UVU before the Wolverines racked up seven consecutive points to lead, 36-28, at the under-five break. Then, treys from UVU's Maria Carvalho and Grange ballooned Utah Valley's lead to a game-high 14. A Laura Segues (Castelloli, Spain) free throw ended the Utah Valley onslaught, but the Wolverines carried a 44-29 lead through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Utah Valley continued to roll, extending its lead to 55-33 before Britter led a Cougars charge to pull Chicago State to within 10 points. The Wolverines held on to win, 56-46.

Britter matched her career-high with 11 points, adding a team-high six rebounds. Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) poured in a Cougars-best 14 points, drilling 5-of-11 shots and corralling five boards. Haklicka and Nadia Thorman-McKey (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) each tacked on eight points.

After two straight mountainous games at nearly 5,000-foot elevation, the Cougars now return to even terrain for a weekend home series against Tarleton State. The Cougars will battle the Texans on Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, with both games tipping off at 1 p.m. CT.
