Women's Basketball Falls to Indiana State at the Buzzer

Sycamores edge Cougars on a last-second tip-in

CHICAGO — The Chicago State women's basketball team (1-7) lost to Indiana State, 59-58, on a buzzer-beating layup from Mya Glanton Wednesday night.

After an Aaliyah Collins layup with 7.2 seconds left put Chicago State ahead, 58-57, Glanton tipped back her own miss as time expired to finish off a comeback win the the Sycamores.

"We gave up too many offensive rebounds," head coach Tiffany Sardin said. "We struggled the entire game to hold onto the ball. Those last-second plays, you have to rebound the ball, and we didn't do that."

Chicago State led, 56-52, with 2:30 left, the the Cougars fell short of earning their first home win of the season.

In their return to Chicago, Quentarra Mitchell and Collins led the Cougars with 13 points each, while Janiah Newell poured in 11 points. The Cougars generated 11 steals, the team's fourth game in six forcing double digit steals.

In the first quarter Wednesday night, Indiana State stormed out to a 4-0 lead before the Cougars ignited an 11-0 run, keyed by Mitchell and Kyjai Miles.

By the end of the first quarter, CSU led, 21-13, with seven points from Collins, including a three-pointer.

In quarter two, the Sycamores re-took control, scoring 18 points behind Del'Janae Williams, who scored eight in the quarter on six free throws. The Cougars committed six second quarter fouls, allowing seven points as Indiana State made it 33-31 CSU at halftime.

The third quarter featured little rhythm, as the teams combined to commit 12 turnovers in a messy frame in which the Cougars and Sycamores each only scored 10 points. For CSU, Mitchell's paint presence continued to be the key, as she scored five more of her 13 points.

In the fourth quarter, foul trouble became a factor, as Collins, coming off back-to-back WAC Freshman of the Week selections, committed her fourth foul at the 5:08 mark, when CSU led, 52-50.

After two Williams free throws, the game was tied at 52 with 4:00 left. Two possessions later, an Allysah Boothe steal led to a Newell trey to push CSU ahead, 55-52.

By the 30-second mark, the game was tied at 56 when Boothe fouled Williams with Indiana State in the bonus. Williams missed the first but drained the second free throw to put the Sycamores up, 57-56.

On the subsequent CSU possession, Collins scooped up a loose ball on a broken play, slashed to the hoop and swirled in a layup to power the Cougars ahead, 58-57.

On the final possession, however, with 7.2 seconds left, Glanton converted the second-chance opportunity to give the Sycamores their second straight win, edging Chicago State at the buzzer.

Williams led the Sycamores with 24 points on the evening, 12 of her points coming on free throws.

"We need to do the little things, and get back to our defensive pressure," Sardin said. "We need all five players locked in on the floor."

The Cougars return to the Jones Convocation Center hardwood on Saturday at 12 p.m. for a matchup with St. Thomas.
