Cougars Fall to Top-Seeded Kansas City at WAC Tournament

Bethany Carstens with team-best 19 points

LAS VEGAS  – The Chicago State women's basketball team dropped a 86-52 contest to No. 1 seed Kansas City in the quarterfinals of the WAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Cougars were paced by 19 points from freshman Bethany Carstens (Kenai, Alaska/Nikiski) while Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) added 16 points. Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain/) had a team-best eight rebounds.

The Cougars started the first half strong, keeping the regular-season WAC Champions at bay for the majority of the quarter. The Roos jumped out to an 11-2 lead at the 5:32 mark but after the media timeout the Cougars were able to cut the lead to five with points from Bowers and Mata Boix.

Kansas City jumped out to a huge lead in the second quarter outscoring the Cougars, 26-8 to take a 44-20 lead at the break.

Carstens was a bright spot in the second half for the Cougars. The top scoring freshman in the WAC, scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half. She scored the first Cougar points of the half and really provided a spark throughout.

The Cougars had a good fourth quarter, keeping pace with the Roos and battled them to a 21-17 score in the quarter but couldn't overcome the hot shooting Roos who shot 50.8 percent for the contest.
