MARION, Ill. – The Chicago State baseball team dropped a heartbreaking, 4-3, contest to Northern Illinois on Friday afternoon to open action at the Midwest Baseball Classic.
Patrick Arndt (Chesterton, Ind./) was 2-of-3 from the plate with one run scored while
Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) threw 6.1 innings of work.
The Cougars struck first with two runs in the second inning. Reggie Brock got things going with a single to the left field line, while Arndt followed with a double which placed both Cougars in scoring position. With back-to-back walks from the Huskies, the Cougars got on the board as Brock rounded home. Arndt made the trip home on a sacrifice fly from
Andy Gaytan (Oak Forest, Ill./), as the Cougars to the early 2-0 lead.
Northern answered in the home half of the inning. With two outs, the Huskies rallied and with a single through the left side and a walk had runners in the scoring position. A single up the middle scored one run and but the Huskies attempt to tie the game failed as the Cougars had a heads-up play at home plate throwing the runner out.
Chicago State tacked on to its lead in the fifth with a single run to take a 3-1 lead. A double from
Dalton Daily (Visalia, California/) followed by a single from
Richard Paulino (San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic) set up to send Dalton around the bases.
Northern Illinois tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut into the lead but it was seventh inning in which the Huskies took the lead. They got things started with a leadoff double followed by a single followed by another double which scored a run to tie the game at 3-3. The home team took the lead on a single to right field which scored a runner.
The Cougars tried to earn the lead back in the eighth inning. The with two outs, Reggie Brock walked to give the Cougars a base runner. A single from Arndt moved Brock to scoring position but both were left stranded to close the inning. That would be the last effort for the Cougars as they couldn't get anyone on base in the ninth inning.
