BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. – The Chicago State women's basketball team knocked off WAC undefeated, CSU-Bakersfield and snapped the Roadrunners nine-game home win streak with a 60-58 win on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars were led by
Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) who posted a game-high 24 points and was 9-of-10 from the stripe.
With game tied at 58 with under a minute to play, the Cougars capitalized on a steal from
Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli). A foul from CSU-Bakersfield sent Bowers to the line, where she drained a pair and gave the Cougars their first win of the season.
Bowers led a trio of Cougars (1-18, 1-5 WAC) in double figures. Cliff added 14 points while
Bethany Carstens (Kenai, Alaska/Nikiski) recorded 11 points against the Roadrunners.
Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain/) grabbed 14 rebounds in the win, which snapped a 22-game losing streak for the Cougars.
The game was back-and-forth for the majority of the contest with neither team taking more than a six points lead at any of the quarter breaks. The Cougars shined in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Roadrunners, 15-7.
The momentum shifted late in the third quarter. The Roadrunners held a 51-42 lead before a trey from Carstens at the end of the quarter. The triple sparked a 9-0 Chicago State run including an old-fashioned three-point play from Mata Boix that tied the game at 51 before a free throw from Bowers gave the Cougars the lead with 4:48 left in the contest.
The Cougars capitalized on Roadrunner miscues to the tune of 10 points and were 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
