Cougars Fall in Phoenix

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Chicago State women's basketball team fell 84-49 to Grand Canyon University last night, inside the GCU Arena.

Seven different Cougars contributed to last night's offense, as Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) (Flint, Mich./ Southwestern) led the team with 13 points while Destinee Pointer (Waxahatchie, Texas/Waxahatchie) (Waxahatchie, Texas/ Waxahatchie) and Shamim Wambere (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) (Ann Arbor, Mich./ Huron) each scored 11 points apiece. For Pointer, nine of her 11 strikes came from beyond the arc as the red-shirt sophomore shot 3-of-5 from downtown.

The Lopes got on the scoreboard first after draining a three-pointer in the opening minute of play. Despite the early attack, CSU came ready to battle. Down 8-6 midway through the opening quarter, Pointer netted her first three-pointer of the day and pulled the Cougars ahead to a 9-6 lead. Following the bucket, Tamara Olverson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Winton Woods) stole the ball off a GCU possession and Bowers completed the play with a made layup to stretch their lead to three. By the end of the quarter, Grand Canyon had taken back the lead, 20-15.

Both teams slowed down in the second quarter, as Chicago State did not score until the sixth minute of the frame when Pointer pulled up on a deep jumper. With just nine second quarter points, the Cougars deficit had widened by 12, trailing 36-24.

The Lopes reignited their offense and took off in the third quarter with a 10-0 run after the Cougars committed three consecutive turnovers. Bowers and Olverson continued to make shots for CSU but by the 6:43 mark, Grand Canyon had extended its lead to a commanding score of 48-28.

Chicago State shot just 5-of-16 over the final 10 minutes of play, ultimately falling 84-49 at the hands of the Lopes.

CSU will return to action this Thursday night at home in the Jones Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The Cougars are set to take on Utah Valley in WAC action.
