Baseball Falls at Saint Louis in Series Opener, 7-2

ST. LOUIS – Chicago State baseball fell to host Saint Louis by a score of 7-2 today at the Billiken Sports Center in the series opener between the two teams.
 
The visitors gained an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) lined an RBI single to right field which scored senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) from second after he led off the inning with a single.
 
SLU then tallied three runs in the second and added four runs in the third to claim a 7-1 leading margin.
 
In the fourth inning, Chicago State scored its final run when senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) led off with a double down the right field line and crossed home plate on the next play via an RBI double from junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf).
 
Senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) batted 2-for-3 and Thomas went 2-for-4 to lead the Cougars on the offensive end, while junior reliever Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas/Melissa) held SLU to two hits and struck out two batters through five scoreless innings thrown.
 
Both teams will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. for the second game of this weekend's series.
