Women’s Basketball Falls to Grand Canyon on Senior Day

The Cougars honored their senior players before Saturday's contest against Grand Canyon

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's basketball team concluded its home schedule at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon with a 65-60 loss to Grand Canyon on Senior Day.
 
The team honored senior student-athletes Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) and Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central), and senior manager Amara Akujieze in a pregame ceremony.
 
The Antelopes jumped out to an early 6-2 lead two minutes into the first quarter on a layup from Cheyenne Hedrington, but the Green and White scored 12 unanswered points in a five-minute span to take their biggest lead of the game at 14-6 with 2:07 left in the stanza on a three-point play from freshman Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods).
 
GCU would later go on a 25-9 scoring drive in a 10-plus minute stretch to regain the lead at 31-23 following a Hedrington three-pointer at the 1:32 mark of the second period before junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) drained a three with 44 seconds left to cut the Cougars' deficit to 31-26 heading into intermission.
 
Both teams battled through three ties and three lead changes in the opening three minutes of the third quarter before Allen scored on a layup to give the Green and White a 37-35 advantage with 6:35 left. The Lopes finished the stanza with a 12-5 run in the final 5:23 to reclaim the lead at 47-41 to end the stanza.
 
The Cougars (4-22, 2-10) came back with a 10-3 scoring drive three-plus minutes into the fourth to take a 51-50 lead on an Allen layup at the 6:46 mark before
 
Allen paced three players in double figures for the Green and White with 18 points. Murphy added 14 points, while freshman Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) contributed a double-double of 13 points and a game-leading 13 rebounds.
 
Jessica Gajewski tallied a game-high 22 points for Grand Canyon (15-13, 7-5), who also had three players score in double figures.
 
The Cougars hit the road for their final two games of the season beginning on Feb. 27 at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a start time of 7 p.m.
