Murphy Scores 19 Points vs. Utah Valley, Joins CSU 1,000-Point Club

CHICAGO – Senior Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) scored 19 points to become the 10th member of the Chicago State women's basketball team's 1,000-point club Thursday night as the host Cougars dropped a 69-62 decision to visiting Utah Valley in a Western Athletic Conference contest at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
Murphy converted only four of her nine field-goal attempts, but shot 11-of-14 from the free throw line and scored her milestone with a pair of free throws at the 2:37 mark of the second quarter. She also finished the game with nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists for the Green and White.
 
CSU jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in the first four minutes of the first quarter on a three-pointer from junior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) and later took a 17-8 advantage with 2:12 remaining on two Murphy free throws.
 
The visitors then went on a 15-3 scoring drive in a five-plus minute span to gain a 23-20 lead with 6:27 left in the second quarter on a three-pointer from Rebecca MaWhinney. Both teams then battled through five lead changes and three ties in the final six minutes of the stanza before entering halftime deadlocked at 31-31.
 
It was more of the same in the second half as CSU and UVU went through six lead changes and four ties in over seven minutes before the Wolverines went on a 13-3 run between the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters to gain a 52-43 lead with 5:26 left in the fourth. After the Cougars pulled within 52-48 at the 4:28 mark on two more Murphy free throws, the visitors closed the game with a 17-10 run for the final margin.
 
Freshman Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) matched Murphy for team high scoring honors with 19 points and posted a season-best four blocked shots for Chicago State (4-21, 2-9), while redshirt sophomore Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) added nine points. Senior Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) dished out six assists and freshman Sh'Toya Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind./Wayne) finished with five steals.
 
Deijah Blanks led all players with a double-double of 29 points and 10 rebounds for Utah Valley (13-13, 6-5).
 
CSU concludes its home schedule on Saturday afternoon against Grand Canyon in its annual Senior Day and Play4Kay game with a start time of 2 p.m.
