CHICAGO – A pair of Cougars finished in double-digits but Chicago State women's basketball fell to Utah Valley 72-46 on Saturday (Jan. 25) in a Western Athletic Conference contest at the Jones Convocation Center.
Utah Valley opened an eight point lead in the first half only to see the Cougars cut the score to just three points (34-31) at the break. Freshman
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney)' 12 points in the opening half boosted the Cougars offense. Harris would finish with 12 points and three 3-pointers for the game after Utah Valley limited Harris to just four field goal attempts in the second half.
Utah Valley took control of the game in the second half thanks to newfound success beyond the arc. After shooting 0-for-7 in the first half from 3-point land, the Wolverines went 5-of-8 in the second half. Utah Valley also took advantage of the Cougars' 11 turnovers, scoring 14 points off the miscues. Eight of Chicago State's turnovers came in the second half.
Rebecca MaWhinney led the Wolverines with a game-high 15 points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) scored in double-digits for the eighth time in nine games. Murphy recorded 12 points while adding six rebounds, a season-high four steals and a block. Junior
Chanel Wilson-Stewart (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph's) totaled 10 rebounds, her fifth 10 plus rebound game of the season.
Utah Valley improves to 4-15 (1-5 WAC). The Cougars are now 3-17 (0-7 WAC). Chicago State hits the road on Thursday (Jan. 30) for a WAC contest at Grand Canyon.
