CHICAGO – Despite sophomore
Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central)'s third career double-double (15 points and 10 rebounds), the Chicago State women's basketball team fell to Loyola Chicago 77-63 at the Jones Convocation Center on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 31).
It was a career-high in points and assists (4) for Murphy. Juniors
Chanel Wilson-Stewart (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph's) and
Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) each added in 11 points in defeat. Freshman
Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) also tied her career-high with eight points.
After trading baskets to begin the game, Loyola Chicago went on a 9-0 run to lead 19-10 with 11:43 remaining in the first half. The Ramblers expanded their lead to 18 at 38-20 at the 1:45 mark before heading into halftime with a 38-26 advantage over Chicago State.
The Cougars cut the deficit to nine on several occasions in the second half including Murphy's jumper with 5:42 remaining to make the score 61-52, but the Cougars could not get any closer.
The Ramblers shot 53.4 percent (31 of 58) from the floor. Loyola's Troy Hambric led all scorers with 26 points while her teammate Becca Smith had a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Chicago State fell to 2-10 while Loyola Chicago improved to 4-8. The Cougars host Seattle U. on Thursday (Jan. 2) for their first Western Athletic Conference game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.Â
