Western Michigan Uses Second Half Run To Beat CSU Women’s Basketball

CHICAGO -  Junior Tierra Williams (Detroit, Mich./Lathrup) scored a team-high 18 points, but the Western Michigan Broncos pulled away in the second half, defeating the Chicago State Cougars 67-49 at the Jones Convocation Center Sunday afternoon (Dec. 1).

Western Michigan's Marquisha Harris led all scorers with 19 points and 19 rebounds. Chicago State sophomore Jasmine Sanders (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest) added in 12 points in the loss.

The Broncos started the game on a 10-3 run, but Williams answered back with two three-pointers, cutting the deficit to one with 9:18 remaining. The Mid-American Conference (MAC) foe kept the Cougars at bay, maintaining the lead through the first stanza, leading 26-22 at halftime.  

Harris' layup at the 16:36 mark of the second half gave the Broncos their largest lead at the time, 32-25. Freshman Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) responded with four consecutive points, but Western Michigan followed with a 17-5 run to lead 49-34 with 9:46 to go. The Cougars cut the deficit to nine on two separate occasions, but couldn't get any closer.

The Broncos move to 3-4 on the season while Chicago State fell to 1-6.  Angela Jackson's squad hits the court next Friday (Dec. 6) as they take on Valparaiso in the University of Toledo Tournament in Toledo, Ohio.  Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
