CHICAGO – Chicago State women's hoops shrunk a 19-point second half deficit to just two points before falling 69-66 to Southern Illinois on Saturday (Dec. 29) afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Jones Convocation Center.

Chicago State led for most of the first 10 minutes of the contest before the Salukis opened up a 31-23 advantage at halftime.

Early in the second, it looked like Southern Illinois was going to put away the game for good, opening the frame on a 17-6 run to take a 48-29 advantage with 12:58 remaining. The Cougars turned up the defensive pressure and forced some turnovers to get back in it on the offensive end.

“They had a barrage of uncontested fast break layups, (early in the second half)” head coach Angela Jackson said. “Then we kinda found our way midway through the second half and were able to get them to turn the ball over.”

By the 5:01 mark it was a 56-46 score thanks to a pair of free throws by sophomore Jasmine Collins (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South). Sophomore Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) nailed a 3-pointer to make it a 65-59 game with 56 seconds remaining. Chicago State benefited from five missed Saluki free throws over the final minute of the game. A traditional 3-point play by Collins with four seconds remaining put the Cougars down two at 68-66. Cartaesha Macklin was then fouled and made only the first of two free throws setting up senior Caneka Davis (Chicago, Ill./Walther Lutheran)' (Chicago, Ill./Walther Lutheran) desperation half court attempt at the buzzer to knot the game. However her shot wasn't on target.

“We dug ourselves a little hole and didn't have enough time to get out of it,” Jackson said.

Freshman Layne Murphy (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) (Country Club Hills, Ill./Rich Central) recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Collins totaled 12 points. Sophomore Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) added 10 points and five assists. Williams scored all of her team-high 17 points in the second half.

Chicago State made a season-high 16 free throws.

SIU's Macklin led all scores with 19 points. Azia Washington recorded a double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds for SIU.

SIU improves to 3-8. Chicago State falls to 1-12. The Cougars head north on Lakeshore Drive on Monday to play at Northwestern. Tip for the New Years Eve contest Evanston is set for 3 p.m. CT.
