CHICAGO – Senior Janay Dockery (Detroit, MI/Martin Luther King) (Detroit, Mich.) equaled a career high for scoring with 27 points to lead the Chicago State women's basketball team to a 70-65 victory over visiting Western Michigan tonight at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center. With the win, the Cougars improved to 1-9 and the Broncos dropped to 1-6 on the year.
The home team opened the first seven minutes of the game with a 17-5 run that included a six-point performance from junior Jazzmyn Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Bellwood) (Chicago, Ill.), but WMU scored 10 unanswered points in a three-minute stretch to pull within 17-15 at the 10:07 mark following a jumper from freshman Corie Buchanan. CSU then outscored the Broncos by a slim 20-17 margin to head into halftime with a 37-32 lead.
In the second half, the Green and White opened with a quick 5-2 run in the opening minute and a half to increase its advantage to 42-34 after Dockery drained a three-pointer at the 18:38 mark. The Broncos used a 12-5 scoring drive in a five-minute span to slice its deficit to 47-46 with 13:34 remaining in the game following a three-point play from freshman Courtney Haley.
The Cougars would bounce back with a 13-4 run of their own over seven minutes to hike their leading margin back to 10 at 60-50 at the 6:23 mark after Dockery converted a conventional three-point play. After WMU posted a 15-6 scoring drive to close within 66-65 with 28 seconds left in the second half, CSU scored the final five points on free throws from senior Natalie Marlowe (South Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and a fast break layup from Dockery to seal the win.
Dockery added a game highs nine rebounds and six steals for the Cougars, while Marlowe contributed 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. Freshman Paris Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied 11 points and four assists on the evening.
Buchanan led Western Michigan with 16 points, a game-high eight assists and five steals in addition to shooting 7-of-12 from the field. Haley added 13 points, and senior Robin Giden produced 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high two blocks for the Broncos.
CSU returns to action this Sunday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center against Northern Illinois with a start time of 2 p.m.
