Bowers Posts 27-Point Effort in CSU’s WAC Opener at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Chicago State women's basketball opened its Western Athletic Conference slate here today at the Pan American Center with a 27-point scoring effort courtesy of freshman Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), but the host Aggies used a second-half effort to capture a 75-59 home victory.
 
Bowers, in her inaugural WAC contest, connected on 8-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line in addition to tying a season-high four assists.
 
CSU opened the game with a 5-0 lead less than a minute into the first quarter on a three-pointer from redshirt senior Konner Harris (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) at the 8:57 mark. Both teams then battled through seven lead changes and three ties over a six-minute span before NM State score three of the last four points to gain a 17-15 advantage.
 
The Cougars started the second quarter with 10-1 scoring run in a four-minute stretch with Bowers scoring six points and redshirt sophomore Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain) added four points to gain a 25-18 lead with 5:58 left in the stanza. After NMSU closed within 25-23 with a basket at 4:37, Chicago State tallied seven of the last 11 points scored down the stretch to go into intermission with a 32-27 lead.
 
A 7-2 scoring drive opened the third stanza in helping the Green and White take their biggest lead of the game at 39-29 with 7:02 remaining that ended with a jumper from redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central). NM State responded with a 33-12 scoring run over 13 minutes to reclaim its advantage at 64-53 with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter and CSU could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Mata Boix recorded her fourth double-double of the season by grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds and scoring 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Harris finished with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range.
 
Brooke Salas paced the Aggies with a double-double of a game-high 33 points and 13 rebounds.
 
The Cougars return to the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center for a two-game WAC homestand next week beginning on Thursday, Jan. 11 versus Seattle with a start time of 7 p.m.
