Cougars Fall in Close Contest at Wichita State, 66-63

WICHITA, Kan. – Chicago State women's basketball opened the Shocker Winter Classic here tonight at Charles Koch Arena with a close contest against host Wichita State but fell by a score of 66-63.
 
Both teams kicked off the game by battling through eight lead changes and seven ties over eight-plus minutes before the Shockers claimed a 17-15 advantage at the end of the stanza. The Green and White went on to score 13 of the next 23 points in a nine-minute span to capture a 28-27 lead with 28 seconds left in the second quarter after freshman Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern), who scored eight points during the run, drained a pair of free throws. WSU recaptured the lead at 29-28 on a jumper from Aundra Stovall with two seconds left in the quarter to head into intermission.
 
The battle continued into the third quarter as there were nine lead changes and five ties before Bowers canned a jumper to put CSU ahead by a slim 43-42 margin with 1:01 remaining. Wichita State then went on to tally 20 of the next 35 points over eight and a half minutes to capture its biggest lead of the game at 63-57 with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
 
Chicago State used a quick 6-2 run on three free throws from freshman Alexa Blake (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) and a three-pointer from Bowers to pull within two points (65-63) with three seconds left in the fourth before a Shocker free throw provided the final margin.
 
Bowers scored a season-high 28 points and shot 11-of-22 from the field to lead the Cougars, while redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) added 10 points.
 
Rangie Blessard recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead three Wichita State players in double figures.
 
CSU closes out the classic tomorrow night against former Mid-Continent Conference foe Oral Roberts with the opening tip set for 8:30 p.m.
