Women’s Basketball Drops Tough Battle at Valparaiso, 71-60

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Chicago State women's basketball saw itself in a tough non-conference battle here today against host Valparaiso at the Athletics-Recreation Center with the Crusaders recording a 71-60 win.
 
The first quarter opened with two lead changes and two ties before VU scored a pair of baskets to gain an 8-4 lead with 4:31 left. CSU then closed the stanza on an 11-5 scoring drive in the final four minutes to take the lead at 15-13.
 
Six lead changes and four ties started the second quarter until the Crusaders scored eight unanswered points in a four-minute span to regain the lead at 32-24 with 2:46 remaining. The Green and White tallied four of the last seven points of the quarter to go into halftime trailing by a 37-28 margin.

After Valpo scored the first four points of the third quarter to increase its advantage to 41-28, Chicago State responded with an 22-8 scoring drive over a stretch of eight and a half minutes thanks to freshman Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) [eight points] and senior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) [eight points] to recapture a close 50-49 lead at the 8:35 mark of the fourth quarter that ended with a jumper from freshman Tamara Olverson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) in the paint. A 21-10 run in the last eight minutes helped propel VU to the victory.
 
Harris led three CSU players in double figures with her strongest effort of the season so far as she tallied a season-high 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Bowers added 15 points and redshirt senior Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) netted 13 points while shooting 4-of-7 from the field.
 
The Crusaders also saw three players scoring in double figures with Dani Franklin posting a double-double with game highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Chicago State returns to action on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan., for the first day of the Shocker Winter Classic when it takes on host Wichita State on ESPN 3 beginning at 7 p.m.
